Looking for a good freight forwarder? Key questions to ask!

Shipping Port

Freight forwarding is a rapidly growing, competitive industry. There are a number of companies that offer freight forwarder services; some such as KG Logistics have extensive experience, and others may just be finding their feet.

But entrusting the shipment of your goods with a freight forwarder is a big deal, so it’s imperative that you find a company that you can trust. To help you choose a company that’s right for you we’ve put together a list of some of the key questions to ask before getting started.

Are you an accredited freight forwarder?

Reputable firms will usually belong to at least one trade association. Look out for memberships to bodies such as the British International Freight Association (BIFA). BIFA members trade under a nationally accepted set of standard trading conditions that are backed in the insurance sector. KG Logistics is proud to have an accreditation with BIFA and is a member of WCA, which is a strategic partner of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

What shipping services do you offer?

Not all shipments require the same services, so it is important that you ask each company what services they offer, and if they have the right ones for your goods. If you do not know what kind of shipping you require then ask for advice. Most freight forwarders will be able to give you a run down on the services available and which would best suit your needs.

What relevant experience do you have?

If a freight forwarding company has years of experience, it should immediately separate them from younger businesses that may still be learning as they go.

If you have niche cargo it may be worth asking if the company in question has the relevant experience of handling and transporting your type of goods. It may be that your shipment will require specialist transport or cargo holds.

What’s your entire shipping process?

You are entrusting your freight forwarder with important goods, so it is essential you know how the process works and how your goods will be transported to their final destination. A friendly and reliable team should be willing to answer your questions and offer a timely service. Ask for clear explanations of costs, logistics and transportation plans.

KG Logistics offer sea, road and air freight services from most worldwide destinations to the UK, including FCL, LCL, break bulk and roll-on/roll-off services. We will guide our first time shippers through the entire process, offering cost effective solutions for both Ex works and FOB shipments. We can even monitor the arrival and dispatch of each shipment and answer your questions on all clearance procedures.

Will my cargo be insured?

When you decide upon a freight forwarder you should always look at their insurance policy. It’s important that you ensure your goods are insured as they are shipped across the globe to their intended destination.

Will I need to handle the paperwork?

The paperwork involved with the international shipment of goods can become complex and confusing. All importers are required to obtain an EORI number from HMRC to enable their goods to be customs cleared upon arrival in the UK. At KG Logistics we will provide all information to enable our customers to make their applications and ensure a smooth customs clearance process.

What is the extent of your shipping network?

Good freight forwarders will have an extensive and well-established shipping network meaning a much smoother process for the worldwide transportation of your goods. A vast network also indicates a good working relationship with partners. Check that your destination port is part of their network; if there are any issues at your destination port, it’s good to know that someone with local expertise will be on hand to help resolve things.
