Freight Forwarding Frequently Asked Questions

Freight forwarding Frequently Asked Questions

Freight forwarding is a complex process that involves transporting goods from one place in the world to another. But with so many different aspects to consider, it’s unsurprising people have so many questions surrounding freight forwarding.

Our experts have answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help you better understand this vital aspect of international trade.

Q: Which freight shipment method is best for me?

Deciding which method of freight transportation to ship your goods is key to ensuring an economical and successful operation. The best method for you will depend on the time frame and destination location. A small shipment that is needed urgently would best be delivered via air freight. But if your goods have a longer window of time to arrive, and are larger in quantity, then sea freight would be the most cost-effective.

Q: What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL, or Full Container Load, and LCL, or Less-Than-Container Load, are two ways in which goods can be transported with sea freight container shipping.

FCL packing involves paying for an entire container and dedicating all the space inside to your shipment of goods. FCL offers flexibility and a high frequency of sailings, but you must be able to pay for and accommodate the full container. Alternatively, LCL sees the freight forwarder combining your supplier’s goods with others doing the same thing, with multiple shipments sharing the space of containers to fill them up.

Q: What documentation will I need?

International shipments will require a Commercial Invoice and Packing List. Depending on which country you are transporting to and from, you may also need additional documents such as a Certificate of Origin. KG Logistics are experts in the freight process, so will be able to assist with identifying these documents and arranging this part of the process on your behalf.

Q: Where do you ship to?

Q: How much does it cost to ship freight?

The cost of your freight shipment will depend on the origin country, country of destination, how much the shipment weighs and how quickly you want to transport it. The best way to get a cost is to contact us for a free, no-obligation quote.

Q: Are there restrictions on what type of freight I can ship?

Yes, and especially so if you are importing. Your goods will be subject to government regulations and may require a license. Ensure you research import regulations for your destination country prior to contracting any shipping.

Q: Does my shipment need to go through customs?

Yes, it will – before it is loaded onto its container and after unloading at its destination, your shipment will go through customs.

Q: How long does the customs process take?

An exact timeframe for customs clearance cannot be guaranteed. Generally speaking, the customs process when importing into the UK is more complex than when exporting.
